The National Indian Health Board (NIHB) awarded EBCI’s Public Health and Human Services (PHHS) at the 2018 National Tribal Public Health Summit, held recently in Prior Lake, Minn., for achieving substantial gains in public health improvement. Tribal health departments may participate in the NIHB initiative for public health accreditation by meeting “nationally recognized, practice-focused and evidenced-based standards.”

NIHB provides grants to tribal health departments, including the EBCI PHHS, that wish to achieve accreditation through the Tribal Public Health Accreditation Support Initiative (ASI). The grants go to support initiatives that allow for quality improvement activities, improving their relationships with outside sources, increase public health activities, and supports the tribal health departments ability to achieve public health accreditation.

The EBCI was one of 20 different tribal health departments recognized by the NIHB. All departments completed different activities including community health assessments, community member engagement, creative method taking to honor traditions in services, provided recommendations on tribal health laws and codes, and developed relationships with third parties to ensure their community received the highest level of public health services.
