William H. Kanott, 95, of Cherokee, passed away Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at the Cherokee Indian Hospital.

He was born Dec. 11, 1920 in Cherokee to the late Columbus Kanott and Vinnie Seay Kanott.  William was a coal miner for 40 years.  He was a veteran of WWII serving in the US Navy.  He was a strong Carolina Panthers, Carolina Tarheels, and Cubs fan.

William is survived by his children, Patricia “Tootie” Lambert, Billie Jean “Cookie” Wolfe (husband Noah), Kathy “Rock” Burgess, Nancy Wahnetah (husband Rob), Mark “Moe” Kanott (wife Chris), Dennie Kanott, and Brad Kanott (wife Ellita), all of Cherokee and Brenda Kanott of Colorado; one brother, Johnny Kanott; 16 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and 4 great-great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, William was preceded in death by his wife, Naomi Jackson Kanott; son, Eddie Kanott; grandsons, Xavier Otter, John Burgess, and Kevin Long; and daughter-in-law, Francis Kanott.

A visitation will be held on Friday, May 20 at Acquoni Baptist Church from 5-11pm. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 21 at 11am.  Burial will follow at the Jackson Cemetery with William’s grandsons as Pall Bearers. Pastor Ed Kilgore and Ray Kinsland will officiate.
