WAYNESVILLE – Eastbound lanes of I-40 are open again at mile marker 6 in Haywood County following work on the night of Tuesday, Sept. 15 to remove unstable rock masses from a slope along the roadway.

“Our contractor made us aware of the loose rock masses around 2(pm) this afternoon, and the road was shut down so we could ensure everyone’s safety and get the slope stabilized,” explains Brian Burch, Construction Engineer for the N.C. Department of Transportation’s 14th Division.

Aaron Powell, resident engineer, related, “We appreciate drivers’ patience with the backups and detour while we worked to make the highway safe.  We also thank the Highway Patrol and Tennessee Department of Transportation for their quick assistance directing drivers on the detour route.”
