Maney sentenced to prison for embezzlement

 

ASHEVILLE – James Harley Maney, Jr., 32, of Cherokee, was sentenced on Thursday, Oct. to five months in prison and to six months of home confinement on theft charges, announced Anne M. Tompkins, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina. U.S. District Judge Martin Reidinger also ordered Maney to serve three years of supervised release and to pay $286,738.50 as restitution to Harrah’s Cherokee Casino (Harrah’s).

According to court records, in or about 2008, Maney embezzled the funds from Harrah’s, a gaming establishment operated by and for and licensed by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Court records indicate that, at the time of the offense, Maney was a Harrah’s employee. Maney pleaded guilty in March 2013 to one count of theft by officers or employees of gaming establishments on Indian lands and aiding and abetting.

 

Maney sentenced to prison on assault charges

In a separate case, Christopher James Maney, 31, of Cherokee, was also sentenced on Thursday, Oct. 9, on assault charges. Judge Reidinger sentenced Maney to 51 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release. According to court records, in September 2011, in Jackson County, within the boundaries of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians reservation, Maney assaulted a minor victim.

Court records indicate that Maney struck the minor in the abdomen, causing an intestinal perforation which required immediate surgery. Maney pleaded guilty in March 2013 to one count of knowingly and intentionally assaulting a minor resulting in substantial bodily injury.

The prosecution for the government was handled by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Jon Smith of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Asheville.
