CULLOWHEE – The Western Carolina University Wind Ensemble and Symphony Band will present their final concert of the 2013-14 academic year at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, an event that will showcase the talents of student soloists and student conductors chosen through an audition process.

The concert, to be held in the John W. Bardo Fine and Performing Arts Center on the WCU campus, is open to the public free of charge.

Four student conductors – Logan Cartwright, Dillon Ingle, Jesse Loyd and Avery Surratt – will be leading the Symphony Band. Directed by David Starnes of the WCU School of Music faculty, the band will perform “Overture for Brass Quintet and Band” by Clarence Barber, featuring WCU’s Smoky Mountain Brass Quintet, along with works by Carter, Giannini, Galante, Sheldon, Tchaikovsky and Vinson.

Student soloists performing with the Wind Ensemble, directed by John T. West of the School of Music faculty, are Eric Jackson, oboe on “Variations on a Theme by Glinka” by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov; Kandyce Norton, clarinet on “Adagio and Tarantella” by Ernesto Cavallini; and Chris Smith, marimba on “Concerto for Marimba and Wind Ensemble” by Ney Rosauro.

The ensemble also will perform a new wind arrangement of Benjamin Britten’s “Passacaglia” from his opera “Peter Grimes” and will end the concert with Paul Hindemith’s “March from Symphonic Metamorphosis.”
