Tribe to host USET Annual Meeting

usetUSET will hold its 2013 Board of Directors Annual Meeting and Business Expo in Cherokee on Oct. 28-31.  USET will have four days of meaningful discussions, presentations, and committee meetings to develop strategies to continue its work to promote and protect Tribal Nations sovereignty.

The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians is the host Tribe of this year’s USET Board of Directors Annual meeting.

There are various issues the USET Board of Directors will discuss including: Trust Reform, state taxation of Indian Tribes, Gaming, Indian Budgets, changing the Washington NFL mascot name, social, and environmental issues.  USET has scheduled updates from U.S. Department of Interior Assistant Secretary of Indian Affairs Kevin Washburn, Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Craig Fugate, National Indian Gaming Commissioner Daniel Little, Indian Health Service, Nashville Area Office Area Director Martha Ketcher, and remarks from the newly elected National Congress of American Indians President Brian Cladoosby, who also serves as the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community in LaConner, Wash.

USET president Brian Patterson (Oneida Indian Nation- New York) praises the participation of all USET member Tribes for contributions to improve the overall health vitality of Tribal communities.  “Our USET seal should serve as a constant reminder to us all about unity and strength of our 26 member Tribes Nations. From our initial origins under the great council oak tree to the present day, we have been honored and blessed by the support nourishment of our membership and our many strong and proud leaders who have been our voice over the years.  I want to thank each of you for your time and dedication to improving the overall health and strength of our Tribal Nations.  Please take time to participate in our activities, engage in conversation, explore the town of Cherokee, and visit our 2013 USET EXPO.  I look forward to a great week and I hope you enjoy your time in the land of the Ani-Yv-Wi-Ya, the Principal People.”
