The Western Carolina War Eagles entered the game on Saturday, April 20 with the Tri-State Wildcats knowing it would be a slug fest as each of three contests were last year. The War Eagles lost all three of those nail biters.

“The difference this year: we are stronger, we are faster and we are more organized,” said War Eagles officials.  “We proved all three of those points this past Saturday in Jonesville, Va. against the Wildcats coming away with a 15-8 victory.”

Right from the beginning, the offensive line, led by Jorge Welch and Ian McCauley, proved they were not pushovers as they opened running lanes a truck could pass through.

This allowed for another stellar game by running backs Josue Otero, who ran for one touchdown and a two-point conversion, and Andre Dewhurst who ran for one score.   Matt Martens added an extra point after Dewhurst’s score.

The War Eagles defense was phenomenal with three stops on their side of the field in the final 8 minutes. One of those attempts reached inside the 5-yard line, but the defense denied each test. A special note for defense: every player made at least 2 tackles each. Tackle leaders were Brett Robertson with 11 plus 1 sack and 2 forced fumbles, Kris Quinn with 8 and Antonio Johnson with 6. Austin Curtice sealed the victory with an interception with 1:08 remaining in the game.
