Congressman Mark Meadows (R-NC) sent a letter on Monday, Feb. 4 to Federal Highway Administrator Victor Mendez about the landslide on U.S. 441.

“I sent a letter to Federal Highway Administrator Victor Mendez urging him to hasten the reconstruction efforts on U.S. 441,” said Rep. Meadows.  “The highway serves as the main thoroughfare into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park from North Carolina, and as a lifeline for Western North Carolina’s tourism-based economy.  With parts of North Carolina’s 11th Congressional District facing double-digit unemployment, it is imperative that the highway is completed before the park’s peak tourism season begins.”

“It is my hope that by working together with Federal Highway Administration officials we can reopen the highway by April 15th instead of the projected mid-May to June timeline.  I ask that all options are considered to ensure the expedited completion of the highway repairs.”
