WCU to host ‘Take Back the Night’ march Sept. 26

CULLOWHEE – A sexual assault survivor who founded a national organization centered on shattering the silence of sexual violence will be the featured speaker at Western Carolina University’s annual” Take Back the Night” event and march on Wednesday, Sept. 26.

Angela Rose, executive director of Promoting Awareness, Victim Empowerment, will present at 7 p.m. in the Grandroom of A.K. Hinds University Center. After her remarks, attendees will march across campus to protest sexual violence and symbolically reclaim the night. The event is free and open to the public.

“Take Back the Night” is part of the annual Red Zone campaign at WCU. The Red Zone refers to the period of time early in students’ first or second years at college during which they are at higher risk of unwanted sexual experiences. Campaign activities sponsored by departments and organizations across campus are designed to educate and empower students to help protect themselves and others from sexual assault.

Sponsors include the Department of Intercultural Affairs, Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity Programs, First Year Experience, Department of Student Community Ethics and Department of Residential Living.
