RTCAR (Revitalization of Traditional Cherokee Artisan Resources) is hosting a discussion about accomplishments, challenges, and issues in river cane restoration and preservation entitled “The State of Cane” on Tuesday, May 22 beginning with coffee at 9am and finishing with lunch at 1:30pm. The symposium will be held at Birdtown Community Center and will be free to all attendees. River Cane is a culturally important plant used by the Eastern Band of Cherokee in the most traditional basketry forms. RTCAR partners from regional watershed organizations and land trusts will be on the program to talk about their projects and how this cane will be made available to Cherokee artisans and harvesters now and in the future.   The symposium is free, but please sign up by May 21 to be included in the lunch count.  Info: RTCAR 554-6925 or 554-6856 or at the office at Cooperative Extension.
