Cherokee Lifestyle Balance program seeking individual participants

The Cherokee Lifestyle Balance is a diabetes prevention program providing a fun way to learn how to eat healthy, manage stress & increase physical activity for a lifetime.

The Program:

     The Cherokee Lifestyle Balance program is based on the national Diabetes Prevention Program, proven to decrease the risk of type 2 diabetes by 58%. The program was modified with emphasis on Cherokee culture and fun interactive learning.

      In Cherokee, free group classes will be held weekly on Wednesdays from 12-1:15pm for 10 weeks starting Feb. 1 in the GLW Complex Community Rooms.  In Snowbird, free group classes will be held weekly on Thursday from 12-1:15pm for 10 weeks starting Feb. 2 at the Snowbird Rec. Dept. 

     *Tribal Employees receive 45 minutes of administrative leave pending supervisor’s approval

      Classes include a free healthy lunch, physical activity, interactive learning on nutrition, fitness, and stress management.

     Pre and post blood work with individualized health assessment, education & plan that fits your needs for healthy living.

     Each participant will have a Lifestyle Coach to offer ongoing support on their journey towards a healthy lifestyle.    

Requirements:

  • Have a body mass index of 25 or higher, indicating overweight or obesity, plus two of the following:
    • Cherokee or other minority race or ethnicity
    • First degree relative with diabetes
    • Diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, or polycystic ovarian syndrome
    • Pre-diabetes (fasting blood sugar over 100 or a Hemoglobin A1C over 5.7%)
    • Diagnosis of High blood pressure
    • Triglycerides over 250 mg/dL
    • HDL cholesterol less than 35 mg/dL
    • You MUST be committed to attending a minimum of 8 out of 10 classes.  Space is limited.  The deadline for enrollment is Monday, January 23.  This program is sponsored by Cherokee Choices and the Cherokee Indian Hospital.
