Lady Braves win second in a row

                ROBBINSVILLE – The Cherokee girls cross country team won its second in a row by besting runners from six other schools at a meet in Robbinsville on Wednesday, Sept. 21.  Cherokee won the meet with a score of 36 followed by Hayesville with 61.  Those were the only two schools with enough runners to post a team score.

                Freshman sensation Kendall Toineeta won the meet, her third first place finish of the season, with a time of 20:13.  She was followed by Amber Long, Robbinsville, 21:31; Katie Bowden, 21:44; and Avery Mintz, Cherokee, 22:00. 

                Other Lady Braves competing included:  Jordyn Thompson, 8th, 22:37; Shayna Ledford, 9th, 22:46; Alea Tisho, 14th, 25:57; Alexis Maney, 18th, 27:16; Miranda Smith, 19th, 27:17; Bradley Welch, 23rd, 28:40; Deija Burgess, 24th, 29:19; and Ashlee Smith, 26th, 30:21. 

                On the boy’s side, Robbinsville took the team victory with a score of 33.  They were followed by Hayesville 35, Swain 70, Andrews 175 and Hiwassee Dam 196. 

                Taking first place in the meet was Dylan Johnson, Hayesville, with a time of 16:02.  He was followed by Frank Cline, Robbinsville, 17:03; Robert Vinson, Hayesville, 17:31; and Irvin Portugal, Robbinsville, 17:49. 

 

Cherokee's E.J. Carroll digs hard at the finish. He edged Adam Banks, Hayesville, by two seconds to take 15th place in Wednesday's meet.

               Cherokee had two runners in the field including E.J. Carroll who took 15th place with a time of 20:49 and Levi Swearengin who placed 20th with a time of 21:16. 

 

Middle School teams

                Swain Middle School boys took first place in the middle school division with a score of 53.  They were followed by Hiwassee Dam 64, Robbinsville Middle 72, Hayesville Middle 75 and Cherokee Middle 84. 

                Kurt McClure, Hayesville, won the meet with a time of 12:27.  He was followed by Adam Urbaniuk, Hayesville, 13:06; Phineas Little, Swain, 13:34; and Brock Powell, Cherokee, 13:35. 

                Other Cherokee Middle runners included:  Shoderick Wolfe, 8th, 14:09; Isiah Davis, 16th, 15:01; Gabe Crowe, 27th, 16:43; and Ethan Swearengin, 29th, 16:57. 

                The Robbinsville Middle School girl’s team won first in their division with a score of 22.  They were followed by Swain Middle 68, Hayesivlle Middle 69 and Hiwassee Dam 93. 

                Shawnda Martin, Robbinsville, took first with a time of 13:21.  She was followed by Katie Estep, Hiwassee Dam, 14:46; Madie Dockery, Robbinsville, 15:16; and Sarah Loafman, Robbinsville, 15:20. 

                Devona Reed, Cherokee, took 6th place with a time of 15:40.  Her teammate, Danika Sequoyah, took 22nd place with a time of 18:29.
