Sky Kanott is excited to join the team at EBCI Cooperative Extension as the new Youth Council – 4-H program intern.  She will advise and help mentor the 42 members of the Cherokee Youth Council, an organization for kids ages 12-18 as well as work with the 4-H program in Cherokee.

“I love kids,” Kanott said of her excitement over her new position.  “I can’t wait to watch them grow.  In my position, I’ll help them get what they need as they develop leadership skills and give back to the community.”

The EBCI tribal member graduated from Western Carolina University in December 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in Communications – Public Relations concentration.   “Public Relations is my major, event planning is my passion,” said Kanott.

While at WCU, she helped organized the Peace Jam conference which brings young leaders together to help solve issues on a global scale such as people’s right to basic needs.

Kanott will help arrange and organize the Youth Council’s trip to this year’s Unity (United National Indian Tribal Youth), Inc. conference being held July 8-12 in Minneapolis, Minn.  The Cherokee Youth Council has attended the event for several years and last year’s event, held in San Diego, drew over 1,200 youth from Youth Councils in 22 states and Canada.

“I wish I had had a Youth Council when I was growing up,” she said.  “It would have helped me develop faster.”

Kanott is from the Yellowhill Community and is the daughter of Mark and Christine Kanott.
