James “Jim” Robert Smith – obituary

James “Jim” Robert Smith, 85, of Cherokee, passed away Sunday, March 20, 2016 at Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville.

Jim was born Dec. 3, 1930 in Cherokee.  He was a retired veteran of the United States Army and was former owner of Irene’s campground in Cherokee.

He is survived by his wife Irene Smith; one grandson, Jason Smith; one great grandson, Austin Smith; three brothers, Larry, Marvin, and Cedric Maney; two sisters, Lavonda Gregory and Darlene Dover.

Jim was preceded in death by his adopted father, Jesse James Maney; his mother, Muriel Smith Maney; one son, Richard Smith; and three brothers, Jesse Anderson Maney, Douglas Maney, and Manford Maney.

Visitation will be held on Monday, March 28 from 11am – 1pm at Long House Funeral Home.  Graveside services will be held following the visitation at 1:30pm at the Yellowhill Veterans Cemetery.  Rev. James “Bo” Parris will officiate.  Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Steve Youngdeer American Legion Post # 143.
