The Cherokee High School men’s golf team took third place at The Smoky Mountain Country Club on Thursday, March 12 by carding a combined team score of 204.  Swain finished first with 172, Murphy second with 173, and Rosman did not qualify due to lack of players with only two.

“We played a little better than we did on Tuesday but we still have a lot of areas to improve,” said Head Coach Andrew Maney. “Our short game, putting and chipping was not even close to what it needs to be. Short game is an area of golf that takes time and hard work to improve.”

Christian Ensley led the team by carding a 43 on the modified par-36 course.  The shot of the day for the Braves came on hole-8 when Ensley was able to save par by sinking a 20-foot chip shot from the approach.  Momentum followed him to the next hole when he blasted out of the sand to put it close for an easy tap-in for par.

Other Cherokee scores included John Lossiah 48, Steven Straughan 57, and Holden Straughan 56.

The Braves look to build on their season as the new comers begin to get acquainted with the game and continue to improve.

“I’m looking forward to all the new guys that will be available this week for qualifying for the matches. This always creates good competition and pushes the boys to get better,” said Coach Maney.
