The New Kituwah Academy held their 3rd Annual Field Day at the Cherokee Youth Center on Tuesday, May 20.  Students from the kindergarten class through the fourth grade participated in activities hosted by the Youth Center staff.

Candy Crowe, CYC education supervisor, stated, “The goal of the Cherokee Youth Center is to help kids become responsible and caring.  That’s why we go over the rules with them about sharing and taking turns.  If someone falls down, help them up and do not laugh at them and make fun of them.”

Kituwah Academy teacher Samantha Crowe said, “The kids love coming to field day.  It’s a lot of fun; they love the youth center staff.  They’re real comfortable with everybody.  It’s not focused on winning.  It’s about having fun.  That’s the main focus of it.”

The field day event began three years ago when staff members from the Cherokee Youth Center decided there was a need to include Kituwah Academy students in field day activities.  The activities were chosen based on the memories of group leaders and staff members who recalled their field day experiences when they were in school.  In the early part of the day, the kids do various running and cardio activities.  After a lunch served and provided by the New Kituwah Academy staff, the kids get to play in the water.  The Cherokee Fire Department brings in what the kids have dubbed, “The Fun Truck” to provide a cool refreshing mist to cap off the day.
