Owl named Gates Millennium Scholar

Constance Owl, an EBCI tribal member and senior at Murphy High School, has been named a winner of the 2014 Gates Millennium Scholarship. More than 52,000 students nationwide applied for the prestigious scholarship which is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The scholarship is a full, four-year college scholarship to any U.S. accredited college. The scholarship was awarded based on academic achievement, leadership, and community service.

Owl holds a 4.9 GPA and is ranked among the top students in her senior class. She was also a finalist for the Coca-Cola Scholarship, voted Who’s Who, Most Likely to Succeed, Honors Vocational Graduate, and is the student body vice president.

Among her favorite experiences was writing a weekly education column in the Cherokee One Feather this past year.  She has also written for several national Native education blogs and won numerous other scholarships and awards. She will be graduating in June with superior honors from Murphy High School.

Accepted to Dartmouth College, Wake Forest University, Michigan State University, and Stanford University, she has accepted admission and will attend Stanford University in Palo Alto, Cali. in the fall. She is the daughter of Cliff and Janis Owl and the granddaughter of Clifford and Maggie Owl, all of Murphy.
