Tribal members seeking referendum on Council pay, benefits

To the enrolled members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, a signature drive is underway on the petitions posted below.  To have the petition put on the ballot, we must collect signatures from 25 percent of the registered voters.  If you feel that enrolled members should have the right to vote on these issues and want to volunteer to help with collecting the signatures, need or want to sign the petition or have a question, please contact Ted Rose 736-5191, Nancy Long 497-7906, Robert (Poke) Squirrel 497-5174, Jody Taylor 736-7510 or Loretta Crowe 497-9630.

  • For the Tribal Council term immediately succeeding the general election of 2013, and for each term thereafter, Tribal Council members shall receive retirement benefits in the same form, manner and equivalent amount as Tribal employees generally.  This same limitation shall apply to the position of Principal Chief and Vice Chief, beginning with the term of those positions first succeeding the General Election of 2015 and for each term thereafter.
  • For the Tribal Council term immediately succeeding the General Election of 2013, and for each term thereafter, Tribal Council shall be paid an annual salary not to exceed sixty-thousand dollars ($60,000), exclusive of benefits, and adjustments to their salaries shall be in the same form, manner and equivalent amount as Tribal employees generally.
  • Tribal Council members shall not serve as voting members of any commission, committee or board formed and operated under Tribal law or policy, with no exception.
