The Cherokee Diabetes Program-Healthy Heart Initiative would like to invite everyone to celebrate American Heart Month in February.

American Heart Month is a time to battle cardiovascular disease and educate individuals on what we can do to live heart-healthy lives. Heart disease, including stroke, is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. These diseases, the nation’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers, claim more than 865,000 American lives a year.

Taking good care of your heart means controlling your risk factors for heart disease, such as high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, physical inactivity, and being overweight. Having just one risk factor increases your risk of developing heart disease, and your risk skyrockets with each added risk factor.

The Walk for Heart Health is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 20 from 10am – 4pm at the Acquoni Expo Center track.  The first 50 people will receive a t-shirt.  “Help us pass our record of 124 walkers at this event,” said Cherokee Diabetes Program-Healthy Heart Initiative officials.
