CHEROKEE RUNNERS

The Cherokee Runners started the New Year by competing in the Run in 2013 New Year’s Day 5K in Cullowhee.  Robin Swimmer, Elnora Thompson, Susan Paul, Skye Littledave, Chad Bowman, Deb Bradley, Alicia Jacobs, Samantha Ferguson, and Seth Holling competed and several runners placed in their age groups.  With the warmer temperatures, it was a great race.

The Frosty Foot 8K (approximately 5 miles), 30K (18.6 miles) and 50K (31 miles) Races were held on Jan. 12- 13.  Elnora Thompson, Seth Holling and Charlie Myers competed in the 8K and Charlie and Seth placed in their age groups.  Brian Burgess competed in the 30K.  Gerri and Sean Grady volunteered to man the first aid station for the 30K.

The Cherokee Runners met with the Big Cove Community Club in January to finalize the date for the 2013 Moccasin Run.  It will be held on Sunday, Feb. 24.  Registration for this event will be $10 per runner.  All runners will be required to sign a waiver/release to participate.  Runners must meet at Saunooke Village no later than 6am to ride to the start line.  Once again, Big Cove Council Representative, Perry Shell, will be assisting with the event, along with Big Cove Community Club members and others.  Please e-mail gerrgrady@yahoo.com for a registration/waiver form if you are interested in running.

Upcoming races include the Hot Chocolate 10K in Asheville on Jan. 26; 7-Mile Trail of Tears Race in Cleveland, Tenn. (at Red Clay) on Feb.  2; and the Frostbite 5K and 10K in Fletcher on Feb. 17.

The Cherokee Runners invites anyone to join the group.  It meets twice a month at the Age Link Conference Room (usually the 1st & 15th) at 6pm.

A Couch to 5K program will begin in early April with finishers to take part in the Cherokee Runners Sunset 5K on July 4.  Interested individuals may visit the group’s website www.cherokeerunners.com or the Cherokee Runners Facebook page.
