Lady Braves win Cross Country meet

     The Cherokee Braves and Lady Braves Cross Country team showed how hard work and dedicated training pays off. The 2011 Western North Carolina XC Carnival was held Saturday, Aug. 27 at Jackson Park in Hendersonville.  The Braves team was represented by lone runner Levi Swearengin due to other runners sustaining injuries. The Lady Braves competed in the Open Division, running against 22 other schools for a total of 193 female runners.  The Lady Braves took home the first place trophy with a score of 76 followed by Thomas Jefferson with a second place score of 83.

     The pack was led by freshman Kendall Toineeta as she completed the 3.1 race first, with a time of 21:36.  She was followed by teammates senior Shayna Ledford who finished in 3rd place with a time of 22:41 and sophomore Avery Mintz placing 4th with a time of 22:57. 

     Jordyn Thompson, a junior, finished strong with a time of 23:44 coming in at 12th place.  Rounding out the top five scorers for the Lady Braves was Priscilla Squirrell with a 56th place finish and time of 26:21. 

     Juniors Alexis Maney and Deija Burgess, both first year cross country runners finished with a time of 30:03.  “Both young ladies showed impressive determination and sportsmanship as they helped another runner struggling to finish cross the finish line,” said coach Ahli-Sha Stephens.” 

     Karleigh Reeves, a senior and also a first year runner, finished the race strong with a time 33:17.  On the men’s side, sophomore Levi Swearengin completed the course with a time of 22:23. 

     “Coaches, parents and fans are excited about this year’s upcoming season and this race was just a preview what is to come from the Lady Braves team,” said Stephens.  “The 13-member squad is pumped and ready to win conference this year.”

     The Braves, Lady Braves and middle school Braves will open their season on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at the Swain Maroon Devils course in Bryson city. 

     The CHS Cross Country teams are coached by Eddie Swimmer and Ahli-sha Stephens.
