Jones-Bowman Leadership Program recruiting New Participants

     The Jones-Bowman Leadership Award Program announced it is recruiting undergraduate college students who are EBCI tribal members to participate in its 2011-12 program.  The deadline for applications is May 6.

     Jones-Bowman Leadership Awards are made each year to undergraduate students who are EBCI tribal members and have leadership potential they are committed to developing through a year-long fellowship. 

     Funding from Cherokee Preservation Foundation and other contributors enables each Jones-Bowman Fellow to create an individual leadership learning plan that includes activities such as special academic enrichment and tutoring programs, domestic and foreign travel, conferences and leadership development training, mentoring experiences, and sponsored volunteer service in which they may utilize their award funding.

     The Jones-Bowman Leadership Award was established in 2007 to honor the memories and leadership of Principal Chief Leon Jones and James Bowman, founding members of the Board of Directors of the Cherokee Preservation Foundation. 

     To be eligible for the Jones-Bowman program, college undergraduates must be:

–Enrolled members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.

–Enrolled in at least six credit hours per semester.

–Have an interest in community service, cultural learning and ethical leadership within the Cherokee community.

     Jones-Bowman Fellows enjoy the following benefits by participating in the program:

–They participate in unique opportunities that will help them develop their leadership skills.

–They become involved in their community and culture.

–They meet other students interested in becoming leaders within the Cherokee community. 

–They receive funding to take advantage of leadership opportunities.

–They receive guidance from outstanding mentors.
