Charlie Crowe, an EBCI tribal member, was inducted into the Burke County Sports Hall of Fame on Friday, Feb. 4. The induction ceremony took place at the Collett Street Recreation Center in Morganton.

Crowe, known as “Inky” by family and friends, was an All-American halfback in 1961 and 1962 when he played for the North Carolina School for the Deaf (NCSD). In 1961, he gained 1,799 yards rushing and 691 yards passing. He also excelled on the NCSD basketball and track teams.
Some of Crowe’s other accomplishments include:
- 1959 – Outstanding Member of the NCSD Football team
- 1960 – NCSD team named #1 in Nation by The Silent Worker
- 1961 – All-Conference Tailback, Most Valuable Player
- 1962 – All-Skyline Team, All-Burke County Team, All-State Team, Times Player of the Week
- 1979 – Named to NCSD Athletic Hall of Fame
The Burke County Sports Hall of Fame is sponsored by the Men’s Club of Morganton, the Morganton/Burke County Sports Commission and the City of Morganton Parks and Recreation Department. It was established “to recognize and perpetuate the noteworthy sports traditions of Burke County by honoring and memorializing individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to sports traditions in Burke County.”
