Oldest Tribal Member Passes – Oden Lee Matheson

Oden Lee Matheson, 106, of Topton passed into the arms of the Lord Friday, June 25, 2010 in an Andrews care center. She was a native and lifetime resident of Cherokee County. She was a homemaker and a member of the Red Marble Baptist Church.
 She was the daughter of the late Frank and Laura Belle Whitaker Hardin and the wife of the late Jess Lee Matheson, who died Nov. 23, 1955. She was also preceded in death by three sons, Floyd, Ray, and Harold Matheson.
 Surviving are two daughters, Aletha George and husband, Harold of Robbinsville, and Lenora Cottrell of Oak Ridge, TN; a son, Carroll Matheson of Topton; two daughter-in-laws, Bobbie Matheson of Topton, and Kay Matheson of Knoxville, TN; five grandchildren, Carolyn Matheson Hyde and husband, Jimmy, Michael “Mike” Matheson and wife, Nancy of Topton, Gary Cottrell and wife, Theresa of Knoxville, TN, Steve Cottrell of Clinton, TN, and Robbie George of Robbinsville; nine great grandchildren, Hannah Matheson, Brandon Hyde, Brittney Hyde, Kristen Hyde Graither, Ryan Cottrell, Emily, Joshua, Katlyn, and Mary Grace Cottrell; two great great grandsons, Logan Hyde, and Braden Graither; and many extended family and friends.
 Mrs. Matheson stated “Because of my beloved family, friends, and relatives my life was blessed, long, and happy. You have surrounded me with friendship and love.” The Holy Spirit has called our “mom” home, she will be greatly missed.
 Funeral Services: 2:00 PM Monday (June 28) in Red Marble Baptist Church  with Revs. Mickey Stewart and France Postell officiating. Interment was  held in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Danny, Eddie, and  Chris West, Mike Matheson, Brandon Hyde, and Terry Postell. Visitation: 12:30-1:45 Monday afternoon for family and friends at the  Red Marble Baptist Church prior to the services.
 Ivie Funeral Home, Andrews was in charge of all arrangements.
