Swain Boys top Cherokee in SMC Tourney Opener

While the Lady Braves celebrated their first round victory, it was a different outcome for the Cherokee Braves boys teams in the opening round of the Smoky Mountain Conference Tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 17 as they lost to rival Swain 70-62.  The Maroon Devils’ Ryan McMahan poured in 31 points to lead Swain’s offense. 

Swain took an early 18-10 lead after the first period and led at halftime 35-22.  Cherokee came back with a good third period outscoring the Maroon Devils 24-19.  Trailing by eight going into the final period, the Braves were unable to make up the difference as each team scored 16 in the fourth. 

Tyler Williams and Tre Owle led the Braves with 17 points apiece followed by Storm Sequoyah and J.T. Wildcat with 8 each.  Other Cherokee scorers included:  Greg Bradley 4, A.J. Crowe 2, and Seth Littlejohn 6.

Swain is scheduled to take on Murphy tonight (Thursday, Feb. 18) at 5:30 in the main Cherokee arena.
